Missoula County ,Montana covers approximately 2,600 square miles in the western part of the state. Five large valleys and two major rivers wind through this mountainous region. Missoula County has a population of over 100,000 people and the county seat is Missoula.
Missoula is located in an old, glacial lake bed, which is now cut by Clark ForkRiver. The Bitterroot River feeds into the Clark Fork on the Southwest edge of town; the famed Big BlackfootRiver meets the Clark Fork just east of town.
Missoula is dubbed the Garden City for its mild winters relative to the rest of Montana. While Missoula enjoys four distinct seasons, fall may be Missoula’s most spectacular season, when the city’s numerous maple trees and other foliage turn bright orange, red and yell ow and the air is crisp. Highs during September, October and November average about 56 degrees, with lows dipping to an average of 32.
Missoula is 3 hours south of Glacier National Park , 3-and-a-half hours west of Yellowstone National Park and about 45 minutes north of Hamilton. It is surrounded by national forests and a handful of wilderness areas. Lewis and Clark came through the Missoula Valley in 1805. Europeans did not settle in the Missoula area until 1860.
The University of Montana is located in Missoula, as is the Northern Region headquarters for the U.S. Forest Service. Among the city's many attractions are the Charlie Russell Outdoor theater, a Symphony Orchestra, a Children's Theater and a wide range of galleries, shopping centers, coffee houses, book stores, museums, hotels, restaurants and a ballet company.
Missoula offers activities for every season. Summer activities include bicycling, hiking, backpacking, horse packing trips, whitewater rafting, fishing, and more. Winters offer snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and snowboarding.
Needless to say, the Missoula real estate market is a diverse market, offering a wide variety of residential properties and neighborhoods to choose from.
